active stewards of the environment.
Supporting

•Resources – information,
speakers, coaches, experts
•News of what’s working in

•Special events and opportunities to work with others
•Workshops to help congregations in their efforts
History
In 1999 members of Christian, Jewish, and Baha’i congregations
in Evanston conducted a religiously-based discernment process to provide
leadership for a sustainable Evanston. The Circle, now with members from
more than fifteen congregations, has launched four additional organizations
that work with civic, university, and governmental groups. Together they
make up the Network for Evanston’s Future:
•Evanston’s Energy Future
•Evanston’s Transportation Future
•Evanston’s Housing Future
•Citizens’ Lighthouse Community Land Trust
Values
The Circle is guided by criteria that ensure
its actions work for justice, manifest a
deeply spiritual approach, contribute to
the sustainability efforts of others, and involve all age groups.

Evanston’s is one of six Circles. Others are in
Oak Park, LaGrange/Hinsdale, Humboldt Park/Logan Square, Naperville,
and Hyde Park. The Circles are affiliated with Faith in Place, an interfaith
organization working for environmental sustainability and justice throughout
the Chicago area.

Sustainability from a faith perspective focuses on long-term, rather
than short-term goals; affirms the interdependence of all people and
of people with nature; and calls for us to use our time, talent and wealth
to promote our deepest values.
